Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple is finally bringing back its New Year festivities after a three-year hiatus. Come visit at 9.30pm on New Year’s Eve to participate in the joya no kane bell ringing and to watch a New Year’s calligraphy show and a pipe organ concert, all while sipping on a warm cup of amazake (sweet sake). The temple will have a countdown to 2023 and be open until 12.30am. Unfortunately, the lottery to participate in the bell ringing has closed, but you can still watch the event.
Celebrations continue into the next day, with a Buddhist memorial service at 6.30am. Make sure to snap a photo in front of the temple, which will be decked out with traditional Japanese plants like bamboo, pine, senryo (ardisia tree) and chrysanthemum.
Not to worry if you don't want to leave the house over the New Year holidays as most performances will be streamed online via the temple's YouTube channel.
