Meanwhile, another side of Tokyo’s drinking culture is experiencing a spirited revival. Western-style coffee shops known as kissaten and their later offshoots – listening bars – were born in Tokyo in the early 20th century. They have since gone on to inspire similar establishments around the world, and are now experiencing a revival in our city, the place where it all began.
