Shinjo Matsuri in Sugamo

Celebrated every August in northern Yamagata prefecture, the Shinjo Matsuri was added to Unesco's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in November 2016. The 250-year-old festival now goes on an excursion to Sugamo, where students from Taisho University will be working together with organisers from Yamagata's Shinjo to get three of the event's around 20 floats rolling around the streets of the otherwise quiet neighbourhood. Look out for food stalls hawking Yamagata specialities on the Taisho campus throughout the weekend.
