Omiya Hachiman Autumn Festival

Time Out says

With the summer heat beginning to subside, it’s officially matsuri (festival) season at Shinto shrines across Japan. For a more pleasant and less crowded experience, go off the beaten path and join the locals at Omiya Hachimangu, one of Tokyo’s most spacious shrines, for a joyous celebration.

Omiya Hachimangu Shrine’s Autumn Grand Festival is happening for four days from September 13, with the main festivities concentrating on September 15. On that day, expect to see a Shinto ceremonial archery performance at 1pm, and a procession of nine portable mikoshi shrines from the neighbourhood at 6pm. The latter can get boisterous and competitive as several groups jostle to carry the mikoshi within the crowded shrine precinct.

Other smaller but equally worthwhile events are held on the 14th. These include an Eisa performance by a famous local dance troupe, a children’s folk dance showcase and a taiko drum performance. (Show times to be announced later.)

In addition, about 100 food stalls will be set up around the shrine premises, making this festival a must-visit for street food lovers.
