The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum consists of faithful replicas and reconstructions of Edo period (1603-1867) buildings. It's a fascinating place to learn about Japanese history any time of the year – but more so during the New Year's holiday season where it hosts an array of performances and family-friendly activities.
January 2 and 3 offers free admission and traditional performances, including a lion dance (shishimai) at 11.30am and 2pm, as well as old-school New Year activities like mochitsuki, old-fashioned pounding of mochi (rice cakes) at 12noon and 1.30pm.
Admission is required on January 5 and 6, but children get to participate in Edo-period games like spinning tops (11am-3pm) or trying their hands at calligraphy (11am-2pm).
