The Tokyo Midtown complex in Yaesu is lighting up with beautiful illuminations this winter. To pay homage to Yaesu, an area traditionally known for its artisanal craftsmanship, the event features a five-metre-tall Kintsugitsugi Tree at the first-floor plaza, created by assembling wood pieces from the disaster-stricken region of Noto in Ishikawa prefecture and Tokyo.
Inspired by the region's kintsugi technique of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer and powdered gold, the tree is adorned with golden lights to highlight its 'cracks'. This special installation is only here until Christmas and it's switched on between 4pm and 11pm daily.
Better yet, as you get closer to the tree, the lights will change colour as you interact with it. Pay attention to the ceiling, too: it’s decorated with shimmering curtains of LEDs arranged to form diamond shapes and patterns.
Meanwhile, the trees surrounding Tokyo Midtown Yaesu are all decked out with beautiful champagne gold lights. These will stay on past Christmas until February 16.
