Immerse in an interactive show of lights, sounds and projections at Kyu Shiba Rikyu Gardens. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of its public opening, Kyu-Shiba Rikyu Gardens is hosting a special night visit for four days from May 15 to May 18. Themed around the concept of passing time, this Tokyo green space is divided into three areas, each for a different period in Japan’s history: Edo, Meiji/Taisho, and the present day.
The Edo zone features a walking path illuminated with glowing wagasa umbrellas and andon light fixtures that originate from the period. Meanwhile, the Meiji/Taisho zone utilises interactive projection mapping technology to emulate a moon casting light on the ground through stained glass, a Western invention that was introduced to Japan during this period.
Encompassing the most significant section of the former feudal garden, however, is the audiovisual installation by digital content production house 1 - 10 and Junichi Akagawa. Using the latest advancement in audiovisual science, nearly 100 lighting elements spread across the venue will be synced up with speakers and projectors to create an immersive sensorial experience.
