Santa Claus has cancelled his visit to Japan this year due to the coronavirus, so why not cheer your kids up with a trip to this Yokosuka park featuring everyone’s favourite monster, Godzilla? The 9m-tall statue in the park’s Adventure Land area doubles as a slide – plus it's lit up for the festive season until December 27. The lights are blue and red: the blue represents Godzilla’s dorsal fins, which emit radiant heat rays, while the red is the burning cityscape.
The original Godzilla movie shows the kaiju (monster) setting foot on Cape Kannonzaki in Yokosuka after emerging from the sea, so the city commemorates that scene with this massive monument and even a Godzilla-inspired curry dish at Kurihama Flower Park’s restaurant Rosmarinus. If you prefer a more peaceful stroll through the park, then visit the Cosmos Plaza area, which features colourful light-ups in the flower beds and trees.
