For a memorable cultural experience to kick off the new year, head over to Teppozu Inari Shrine near Hatchobori Station this weekend to witness a dramatic winter water bathing festival. The shrine is hosting its 70th annual purification ritual on January 12 from 11am.
As a dramatic expression of gratitude to the local shrine deity and to pray for good health for themselves and their families throughout the year, approximately 80 participants will hop into an icy cold bath wearing only loincloths.
Before undergoing the chilling ritual, participants must undergo a purification ceremony and a series of body-warming rituals such as the torifune, which involves rowing a boat while chanting ancient Japanese poetry. The chants are meant to purify one’s mind and body and release evil spirits.
If you can’t make it on the day, don’t worry – you can catch a live stream of the event online from 10.45am.
