You may think strawberries are a summer fruit, but Japan harvests the red berries during winter, with strawberry shortcakes being a staple at Christmas celebrations around the country. Going to a farm to pick strawberries will be tricky this year, since we’re all advised to limit travel over the holidays, so Saga prefecture and agricultural cooperative JA Saga have teamed up with creative company Afro & Co to launch this two-day drive-through strawberry picking event at the foot of Tokyo Tower.
You can pick Saga prefecture’s signature strawberries, ichigosan, from your car window by driving through the tent, designed to ensure social proper distancing. But that’s not all, your experience even includes two premium strawberry desserts: an ichigosan strawberry sandwich with two different types of cream and an ichigosan smoothie topped with whipped cream and more strawberries – be sure to pick them up from the food trucks after you’re finished strawberry picking. Plus, you’ll get an entry pass to the main observation deck of Tokyo Tower.
Tickets go on sale on December 17 from 12noon and have to be purchased online. Only people actively participating in the picking will need a ticket, so if you’re just driving for your friends or family but won’t be doing any picking, you don’t need a ticket.
