Design your own daruma doll at this little shop in Tokyo’s Adachi ward. Daruma are round dolls with blank eyes. You fill in one eye when you make a wish and add the other when your wish has been granted.
Happy Daruma Kobo offers two types of workshops. If you’re short on time, the Decoration Course (¥1,650) lets you choose a daruma from 16 different colours and decorate it with accessories and markers within 30 to 90 minutes. With the Paint Course, however, you’ll be adding colours to a blank white daruma. The fee for this session varies by the size of the daruma doll: 9cm (¥2,200), 12cm (¥3,300) and 16cm (¥4,400). If you want to decorate your doll with little accessories, you’ll have to pay an extra ¥550. Aprons will be provided and the course takes about one to two hours.
Note that you’ll have to make a reservation in advance to join the workshops.
