Experience Edo-period nostalgia in Asakusa and savour traditional sweets and bento boxes from local mom-and-pop shops, some of which are difficult to get your hands on outside of the festival due to their popularity. You won’t want to miss the ‘sake rally’, which gives you the opportunity to try over 30 kinds of sake – a tasting set of three is priced at only ¥500 while a three-hour all-you-can-drink will set you back ¥2,500. There will also be cultural booths on site, where you can learn how to make the highly Instagrammable fluffy egg omelet rice, perfect your onigiri making skills, and create shimekazari (Japanese New Year wreaths), all for free. Most of the eating and cultural experiences will be held at Sengoku park, but make sure to also visit Asakusa Kenban to see geisha, Japanese idol groups and rakugo performances.
