At the annual Ashigakubo Icicles event in Chichibu, Saitama prefecture, an entire forest is covered with massive icicles that are created by spraying water from a nearby stream into the cold winter air. The area is especially stunning after dark when the lights are switched on for a special illumination. The frozen formations, coupled with the colourful lights, really do create a surreal landscape and you'll feel like you’re walking through a scene from the movie ‘Frozen’.

The frozen forest is open daily from 9am to 4pm, but evening illuminations are held every Thursday to Sunday and holidays from sunset to 8pm. More details here.

You can book a spot on a tour here (in Japanese only).

Laguna Ten Bosch Illumination, Aichi

The illuminations at Laguna Ten Bosch theme park feature four main areas themed after the seas and skies. Illuminated decorations shaped like octopuses, jellyfish and other deep-sea creatures are placed along the wave pool in the new 'Aqua Planet' area. The Gioia Mare beach area, however, focuses on Christmas trees covered in colourful ornaments, giant floating flower basins, as well as 360-degree 3D projection mapping show synchronised to music. The sky area is the main attraction, with an aurora-like illumination depicted with 1,000,000 colourful lights surrounding a floating tree.
