The New National Theatre, Tokyo (NNTT) is Japan's only national theatre dedicated to the performing arts of opera, ballet, (contemporary) dance and drama. It opened back in 1997 in the austere building in Hatsudai designed by Takahiko Yanagisawa and TAK Architects, and has been the stage for an eclectic mix of performances since.
The NNTT comprises the Opera House (also known as the Opera Palace), the Playhouse and The Pit. About 300 performances are staged each year these venues combined, with both international and domestic theatre-heads filling the seats.
