It's all about the eggs at Quatre. Owner Kenji Higashi – a veteran of Japan's first French-run patisserie, A.Lecomte – always has around 20 different cakes on display at his Kakinokizaka shop, including a variety of seasonal offerings. But it's the oeuf puddings – pocket-sized confections of custard and caramel sauce, each served in an egg shell (¥179 each) – that really made his name. These novel treats are now sold at department stores throughout the city; buy them in bulk and you can get them in an egg carton, making for an unusual (not to mention rather yummy) gift. Quatre also offers a range of cakes, tarts, croissants and breads (including an excellent savoury cake salé), as well as a menu of sandwiches and light meals for eat-in customers. And dog owners, take note: your pet pooches are welcome on the outdoor terrace.
