I’m Donut in Nakameguro has become so popular that the speciality bakery has opened a second, larger location in Shibuya. Unfortunately this doesn’t mean the queue is getting any shorter. For your patience, however, you’ll be greeted with an overwhelming selection of 80 types of nama, or fresh, doughnuts, known for their fluffy, chewy, melt-in-the-mouth texture.
The extensive lineup offers both sweet and savoury doughnuts made with different types of dough including a brioche version, a cake-like dough and even a spicy one. Owner and chef Ryota Hirako’s signature, however, is the classic French cruller, which is made from an egg-based brioche and with added cream cheese for a hint of tanginess. Similarly, the fruit doughnuts are made with the same brioche dough but feature dried fruits including raisins and pineapples that have been soaked in wine.
Among the savoury options, the I'm Burger is a must-try – it’s essentially a juicy burger patty sandwiched inside a spelt-based doughnut bun. There's also a luxurious truffle doughnut that has fragrant truffle pieces mixed into the dough.
Additionally, I’m Donut Shibuya also offers a Sustainable Donut menu, where it sells off irregular-shaped doughnuts to minimise waste. A popular pick is the Donut Aman Orange, which takes squished or flattened dougnuts and covers them with a rich honey butter and sweet orange syrup.
