Ginza Imoya offers a selection of sweet potato treats featuring crispy imo-kenpi (candied sweet potato strips; ¥800) and daigaku-imo (candied sweet potato cubes; ¥800) using its original brand of Beni-Haruka sweet potato from Ibaraki prefecture. It’s sweeter than your average sweet potato, as it’s aged for at least one month after harvesting and cooked slowly under a controlled temperature to give it a higher sugar content.
While most sweet potato desserts are on the simple side, Ginza Imoya’s decadent mont blanc (from ¥1,000) is not to be missed. It’s made with a cake base, covered in a generous amount of icing made with a blend of sweet potato and whipped cream and topped with sweet potato crisps. You can either get takeout or eat in and wash it all down with a cup of black tea.
