Japanese beauty products are ahead of the curve – not just in terms of sheer variety but for their inventiveness as well. Well-known internationally, they often set the trend for the rest of the world. Many make-up and skincare products here don’t just focus on efficacy; they are created with the user experience in mind. In other words, you can have lots of fun with them, such as these cool facial sheet masks that look like your favourite fictional characters: think Pikachu, Stormtrooper and more. The best part is, these masks are packaged so beautifully they make great souvenirs, too.

Note: These sheet masks are purchased at the Loft and Don Quijote outlets in Shibuya. Availability varies depending on the store.

Face time

Kabuki Face Pack

Channel your inner kabuki actor with this fun face mask that is the perfect antidote for your skin anytime of year. Even though it’s ideal in the cooler months to aid in maximising moisture, it can also be used in the summer to refresh your face (just leave it in the fridge for a while before using it). The mask may be a bit on the sticky side, but it’s good for the skin as it contains three Japanese herbal extracts to help firm up the skin and leave it plump and moisturised. The pack contains two different coloured masks so you can slip one on with your friend and take some fun selfies.

Pure Smile Oedo Art Masks

Travel back in time with these four Edo-themed face masks. Turn into a geisha-like princess or choose one of the two wacky male versions, and prepare for a fun pampering session together with your friends or partner.

We were surprised at how much moisturiser (27ml) each sheet mask contains, which are also formulated with collagen, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E. Plus, the mask lasts longer than the 15-20 minutes stated on the pack. So just relax, let the serum absorb into your skin, and breathe in the light green tea aroma. If you’re in need of a souvenir, this retro-looking box design is gift-ready.

Pokemon Face Pack

Turn yourself into everyone’s favorite yellow pocket monster with this Nintendo-approved Pikachu face mask. The jasmine-scented yellow mask even comes with Pikachu’s iconic bright red cheeks and pointy ears. If you gotta catch ’em all, you can also get the Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur facial sheet masks.

Pure Smile Nippon Art Masks

The Nippon Art Masks box set comes with four masks based on traditional Japanese imagery imbued with powers: a daruma for luck, a kitsune fox for love, and a Hyottoko against misfortune, plus one 'secret' mask that is different per box.

The masks contain collagen, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E to boost the skin. When we tried one, we found that the essence inside was a bit thin and runny, which is good as you can use the excess liquid on your neck. It took some time for the essence to be fully absorbed properly, but it did the trick all the same. They also make you look quite fierce – we think they can even double as fun Halloween masks.

Star Wars Stormtrooper Face Pack

This moisturising face mask is broad in size, making it suitable for a wide range of face shapes. Safe for a faint lavender scent, this sheet mask is gender-neutral. Plus, it sits so nicely on the face that you can be upright and it won’t fall. In 15 to 20 minutes, the mask will soothe your skin from sun exposure and leave you deeply hydrated.

Pure Smile Art Mask: Will You be a Dog?

As you unfold the sheet mask, you’ll be greeted with a sweet milk pudding-like scent. Ultimately, it’s a cute mask that will add some woofing fun time into your beauty routine – especially if you’re a dog person. After placing the mask on for about 15 minutes, you’ll immediately feel its super moisturising effect on your skin. Don't waste the extra liquid in the pack: massage it into your shoulders to cool down from the summer heat. (Oh, the brand even has a cat version of the mask, if you’re more feline-inclined.)
