Original Inc, the company that runs Time Out Tokyo, has joined forces with Toubei and JR East Cross Station Development Company to set up a new pop-up shop inside Tokyo Station’s underground shopping centre. During this pop-up from February 2 to 26, you’ll be able to eat Japanese seafood in a more casual way.
You’ll find a variety of seafood snacks and meals made by Toubei, a brand that sells ocean-based treats such as pickled fish, dried fish and Satsuma-age (deep-fried minced fish and vegetables). The concept is ‘remixing your favourite food’, with the aim of offering healthy fish-based bento boxes, sandwiches and side dishes that don’t contain any preservatives or artificial seasoning.
The pop-up is part of the Deliciouscity project, which was originally created by Time Out Tokyo’s art director Steve Nakamura, who wanted to introduce the Japanese food scene to visitors. Based on research and trends, it’s been producing food businesses under the concept ‘Pop Food Culture’.
There are plenty of different meals to try at the pop-up. For something light, order the shiso cheese spring roll (¥1,080 for five), which comes with two dipping sauces: mentai mayo and honey mustard. If you want a full meal, the gin hirasu saikyo grilled fish and shumai steamed dumpling bento (¥1,380) will fill you up. Looking for something to take on the-go? Order a kanikama-dog (¥864), which is a deep-fried imitation crab stick in a hot dog bun with basil tartar and tomato sauce.
