Tokyo Station famously has an underground street filled with ramen restaurants, but it now has a section dedicated to curry, too. Yaesu shopping mall’s new Tokyo Curry Quartet features four different curry restaurants, most of which you can’t find elsewhere in the city.
There’s Okushiba Shoten, a famous Hokkaido chain which has opened its first shop in central Tokyo, offering delicious soup curry made with its special shrimp broth. If you’re not into seafood, we recommend going for the black beef hamburg soup curry which is topped with colourful veggies. The award-winning keema curry bread (¥380) made with the same broth is also worth ordering as a side, or even as a good snack to take home.
Next door is ofu curry speciality restaurant, Ginza Swiss. Ofu means European-style, so expect classic Japanese-Western food like beef and pork katsu curries (from ¥1,300), and a katsu sandwich with a slathering of curry sauce inside (¥1,400). It also offers a curry with deep fried crab and katsu, which is exclusive to this store.
You can even get curry from gourmet restaurant Columbia 8, which serves up a delicious keema curry (¥1,000) made with over 30 spices. It’s topped with a bright green shishito pepper – the chef recommends taking a bite of it in between spoonfuls of curry to get the full experience. This is the restaurant's only outlet in the Kanto region.
Then there’s Sitaara Diner with Indian curry inspired by food fromAyurveda, India. Get a classic butter chicken curry for only ¥890, made with a tomato-based roux with heavy cream and cashew nuts to give it a thick and rich consistency. Add a side of fresh naan bread or tandoori chicken, made inside an authentic tandoor stone oven. There are also plenty of options for vegetarians, as several dishes come without meat, or you can even ask to swap in some veggie meat instead.
