This quaint teahouse near Nezu Shrine is quite a looker. Designed by the adjoining Sobokya Design Office, the space highlights the beauty of traditional Japanese-style architecture and uses natural materials like wood and rush tatami mats throughout.
You’ll find innovative designs and traditional carpentry techniques in both the interiors and the furniture. From the moment you walk up to the entrance, you’ll notice wood details like the unique piece of driftwood from Sado Island that’s used as a door handle. Inside, the focal point is a massive table made from a whole slab of zelkova wood with stones from an old well repurposed as the table legs. Additionally, all the chairs around the table are made from tatami mats.
The teahouse menu includes a selection of Japanese green teas including freshly whisked matcha. For warmer days, you can order iced ryokucha (green tea with toasted brown rice) and iced hojicha (roasted green tea). Pair your tea with a selection of wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) from Yamanashi prefecture including hojicha manju, amazake castella cake, strawberry rusk cookies and more.
