It's about time that Hiroo's And The Friet had a competitor, so we're very excited about this new specialist shop opened in late 2014 just off Aoyama-dori, not far from Gaienmae Station. The Belgian fried potatoes ('fritten') on offer here deserve the label 'authentic', as they're all prepared by Bart Sablon, a former executive chef at the Belgian embassy, who's finally realised his dream of serving his homeland's favourite snack in Tokyo. In addition to the main attraction (available in three sizes, ¥490/¥590/¥700 plus ¥100 for dip), Pommeke offers snacks like Flemish carbonade (a kind of beer-based meat stew) and meatballs in tomato sauce, while the dip selection ranges from homemade mayo to a spicy 'Samurai' sauce. And even if all that salty goodness makes your mouth a little dry, fear not – beers are available both on tap and in bottled form. Make sure to try the outstanding Affligem Blond, a rarity still practically unknown on these shores.
