Osechi-ryori is a traditional Japanese New Year’s dish consisting of a multi-layered box called jubako. It’s filled with more than 15 different items and each of them has its own meaning, a token for a prosperous year ahead.
To sample this symbolic dish at the start of the Year of the Rat, visit Restaurant 1899 Ochanomizu (reservations are essential): it offers a selection of 20 dishes, five of which are presented as ‘tea osechi’ and feature ingredients such as macha and hojicha (roasted green tea). Don't miss the matcha kurikinton (mashed sweet potatoes with matcha and sweetened chestnuts), grilled chicken with green tea aroma, and more.
