Okinawa is Japan’s southernmost prefecture, famous for its tropical climate, picturesque island landscape and a cuisine that’s very distinct from the mainland. The islands’ culinary heritage is celebrated at the newly opened Okinawa Stock Store, located Hiroo’s new Eat Play Works dining hall. Ingredients like umibudo (sea grapes), bitter melon, asa seaweed, bonito flakes, mango and passionfruit star in the restaurant’s colourful dishes. Try Okinawan soba, a bowl of chilled soba noodles topped with vegetables and bonito flakes (¥1,000), or go for the chawanmushi served with fresh seaweed, sea urchin and salmon roe (¥1,000). If you’d rather let fate decide, pick from the assorted obanzai (seasonal dishes of the day), where a mixed plate starts from ¥800. Wash it all down with a Fresh Fruit Sour – a mix of fresh fruit (duh), shochu and soda water – or a glass of the local Okinawan spirit, awamori.
