This Kichijoji café and bar is home to a parliament of friendly owls. The ¥2,000 Fureai Course (junior high, high school and university students ¥1,500, primary school students ¥1,000) lets you cosy up to feed the birds. The price is inclusive of a drink for you and a badge featuring one of the owls but if you’re looking to feed them, that’s an extra ¥300 for the experience. Otherwise, you can head straight to the café space and observe the owls from a separate room. There’s no extra charge; you just have to order something from the menu (drinks from ¥300; sandwich set with salad and soup ¥1,000, available 12.30pm-3.30pm). Owl Village also serves as an owl boarding hotel, where owners can bring their feathered pets for day care or an overnight stay.
Oddly, the café turns into the bar Kakutokyo after 7pm, where you can enjoy alcoholic drinks starting at a mere ¥500. During evening hours, you can only observe the owls from a separate room not interact with them. What’s even more peculiar is that Kakutokyo also doubles as a gym for you to learn martial arts (reservations required; from ¥1,000/10min).
