Ichinoden is an institution in Kyoto, known for its saikyo miso cod dish. The famed restaurant has now branched out to Tokyo, with a new outpost at Roppongi Hills on the fifth floor.
The elegant interior is fitted with wooden tables and chairs, and coupled with the ambient lighting, the restaurant gives off a Zen vibe that makes you feel like you’re in Kyoto. There’s a choice of individual as well as communal table seating, plus four private rooms decorated with stained glass windows featuring the Chinese characters for the four types of fish served here: sea bream, Spanish mackerel, cod and salmon.
For the best deal, come for lunch and treat yourself to a sumptuous gindara (sablefish or black cod) kura miso teishoku (¥2,280). This set meal comes with three small appetisers, a dashi-maki tamago (Japanese-style omelette), a miso soup, pickles, rice, and of course, a grilled gindara marinated in miso. The menu offers other kinds of fish, too, with prices ranging from ¥1,880 to ¥5,500.
Come dinner, you can choose to order a la carte or opt for a course meal. You can’t go wrong with the standard omakase course (¥8,800). The Kyoto-style kaiseki meal includes a luxurious kura miso cod rice cooked in a clay pot. Upgrade your meal with a wagyu steak for an additional ¥2,700.
