Make sure to arrive early if you want to dine at Katsuo Shokudo. This restaurant, which specialises in katsuo (bonito flakes), started out as a pop-up shop and now has its own restaurant in Shibuya. It’s only open for breakfast until supplies last, which is usually around lunch time. And what you get here is simple – a a bowl of rice topped with a generous amount of katsuo shavings plus miso soup on the side for ¥1,100.
You can also upgrade your meal by adding a katsuo karaage fried chicken on the side (¥500) or a raw egg (¥300) to make your bowl into a tamago kake gohan (rice topped with raw egg). Rice refills are also welcome from ¥200, and an additional portion of katsuo is free.
