Italy’s panzerotto (a small, deep-fried calzone-like pizza) now has its own specialty shop in Tokyo's posh Daikanyama area. Known as one of the country's most popular street food items, we could say the panzerotto is similar to onigiri rice balls here in Japan, which can conveniently be eaten with one hand, and their recipes have been passed down through many generations.
Il Panzerotto started as a family business in the small town of Capurso in southern Italy. Their signature panzerottos are renowned for their thin, yet crispy texture, achieved by incorporating milk into the pizza dough.
