Nagoya’s popular hamburg restaurant Hikiniku no Toriko has opened its first shop in Tokyo just a five-minute walk from Shibuya Station. The menu offers a teishoku-style hamburg set for ¥1,500, which comes with a 250g all-beef patty and six different condiments. You’ll also get a side of miso soup, as well as a bowl of rice, raw egg and housemade sanrajan spice to make a delicious tamago kake gohan (aka TKG).
But as any Hikiniku fan knows, it’s the toppings that make this more than your average hamburg. You can add grated daikon radish with a sprinkle of shiso leaves for a refreshing meal, sauteed bean sprouts and cabbage for a serve of veggies, or even order a side of cheese fondue to dip your patty into.
For something unique to this shop, get the hitsumabushi teishoku (¥1,800), which swaps out the usual grilled eel with a hamburg patty. First you’ll enjoy the hamburg over a bed of rice, and once you’re halfway through your meal, you can pour in some of the restaurant’s special beef-flavoured dashi to make it an ochazuke.
