A neighbourhood fixture in Toranomon for over 50 years, this classic coffee shop is best known as the home of the Jumbo Purin, a mug-sized custard treat that's best enjoyed together with a cup of strong joe.
The pudding’s recipe hasn’t changed since the coffee shop first opened and features a wonderfully smooth steamed custard topped with a homemade bitter caramel. No toppings or fussy embellishments are added, so you can truly taste the ingredients in each and every bite. Other staples at Hekkelun include a variety of sandwiches, ranging from classic egg salad and tuna to ham and vegetable. Aside from syphon coffee, the creamy milkshake is also a popular choice as well as ice cream floats served with your choice of coffee or orange juice.
One more thing guaranteed to put a smile on your face is the bill. Sandwiches are all ¥500 and under and the Jumbo Purin is just ¥400 a pop. A coffee pudding set is also available for ¥700. Hekkelun doesn’t have a website and reservations aren’t accepted, so showing up early is highly recommended. Plus, things tend to sell out pretty quickly, especially the famous pudding.
