While coffee shops dominate the streets of Tokyo, this offshoot of green tea-focussed Restaurant 1899 Ochanomizu offers tea-based drinks and delicacies in a laid-back, modern location, decorated with traditional Japanese elements like authentic tea boxes and lighting in the shape of Japanese umbrellas.
Located on the first floor of the Hotel 1899 Tokyo, Chaya’s signature drink is a creamy matcha latte with a customisable concentration of matcha powder (you can choose an amount from 3 to 6 grams/from ¥600). Other drink options include a hojicha (roasted green tea) and Japanese black tea latte, tea-based sodas, Japanese tea served in traditional kyusu teapots, and matcha beer.
If you're feeling peckish, go for the small matcha buns featuring different fillings including anko red bean paste and butter, white chocolate and cereal, and other seasonal flavours. If you're just looking for a quick snack, try the sakecha cakes which come in matcha, hojicha and black tea flavours.
