The one-year postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics has proved to be a complicated undertaking, not least because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Games have to be scaled down to cut costs. The organisers are still discussing ways to make the Games a safe and enjoyable event for athletes and spectators alike. Nevertheless, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga have come out to reassure the world that the Games will go on.
For ticket holders who can’t commit to the new dates, you can apply for a refund. While ticket refunds for the Tokyo Olympics have closed, the organisers are now accepting refund applications for the Tokyo Paralympics.
Residents in Japan who purchased tickets via the domestic lottery system can submit their applications for a refund via the ‘My Ticket’ page on the Tokyo 2020 official website. The deadline is 11.59am, December 21. For more information, including the refund process, check this link.
For those living outside of Japan who purchased tickets via authorised ticket resellers (ATR), ticket refunds will be handled according to the respective ATR’s terms and conditions.
The Tokyo Paralympics will take place from August 24 to September 5 2021.
