The number of Covid-19 coronavirus cases in Tokyo is continuing to increase, with a record-breaking 367 confirmed cases on Thursday July 30. This is despite calls for caution over the long weekend, when Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike urged residents to stay home and only go out for essential reasons. Even with Tokyo at the highest alert level on the city’s new virus monitoring system, it seems people are still continuing to go out and enjoy the early summer days.

According to the Nikkei Asian Review, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is requesting restaurants, bars, karaoke parlours and other similar venues to shorten their trading hours and close at 10pm, effective from August 3 until the end of the month. This is the same measure that was part of the initial stage of Tokyo’s reopening plan after the state of emergency was lifted, when restaurants were asked to stop serving food and drinks at 10pm. Venues that choose to comply will receive ¥200,000 in compensation.

At the time of writing, there are 11,861 cases in Tokyo.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information is available.
