Japan holds an impressive number of Guinness World Records, especially when it comes to food. Tokyo, after all, is the city with the most Michelin-star restaurants in the world. If you’re looking to indulge in more luxurious food, Japan is now also home to the world’s most expensive ice cream.
Japanese luxury ice cream brand Cellato recently claimed the Guinness World Record for the most expensive ice cream with its premium white truffle gelato offering. This indulgent ice cream also features sake kasu (sake lees) and parmigiano cheese. And the cost? An eye-watering ¥880,000 per serving, which is about USD6,500.
It’s made with a generous amount of Italian premium truffle known as ‘white diamond’, which costs around ¥2 million per kilogram. The base has two kinds of ice cream and sake kasu, which complements the truffle.
It’s then topped with white truffle and parmigiano shavings, plus gold flakes to make it even more exclusive. You can opt to pour on some white truffle oil, too.
Each order comes with a metal spoon handcrafted by Kazarikanagu Takeuchi, a metalwork company in Kyoto that specialises in making intricate ornaments for Japanese temples and shrines.
If you want to splurge on the ¥880,000 ice cream, you can order it on the Cellato website. The brand also has a relatively more affordable option with black truffle, chocolate and yuzu for a still considerable ¥10,000 per serving.
