Besides sushi and ramen, one of the best things you can eat in Japan is pizza. Surprising? Maybe, but Japan – and Tokyo specifically – is known for consistently serving up some of the world’s best pizza. And as if to prove our point even further, Time Out International’s just-released ranking of the best pizza around the world has a standout Tokyo pizzeria in the top three.
In this year’s ranking, Tokyo’s Pizza Marumo grabs third place among 19 superb pizzerias worldwide, trailing only Pizzeria da Attilio in Naples (No 1) and New York City's Scarr's Pizza (No 2). The restaurants on the list were chosen by Time Out’s travel writers and international editors, who tried and tasted all the pies for themselves.
Located in Ebisu, Marumo is a cosy pizza enclave known for its meticulous 24-hour fermentation process and unconventional pizza flavours that reflect chef Yuki Motokura's diverse culinary background.

While you can order classic margheritas and marinaras at Marumo, one of the restaurant’s most popular pies is the Japanese Umami pizza, which melds Italian and Japanese flavours for a unique punch. The pizza features a dried shiitake mushroom cream base topped with mozzarella, pecorino, mackerel, bonito flakes, kombu, green onions, sesame and soy sauce.
