Athletes aren’t the only ones who need cheering on. Here to give the unsung heroes of the city all the adulation they deserve is Cheers One – a themed café where the wait staff, all dressed up in cheerleading uniform, are your personal cheerleaders.
Since opening in 2019, the cafe’s main feature has been an all-female squad performing cheer routines for diners who needed encouragement. However, in the spirit of inclusivity, the cafe has recently started hiring male cheerleaders as well.
The cafe’s first ‘cheer boy’, who has a background in musical theatre, now works in the Cheers One Ginza location. The company says it plans to hire more male cheerleaders who have experience in dance and music to expand its squad and lift the spirits of Tokyoites during the pandemic.
When visiting the cafe, you can choose a routine from a menu for the cheerleaders to perform in front of you. However, the cafe has a social distancing option for this feature, too. If Covid-19 safety protocols make it difficult for you to visit in person, you can also visit the cafe via Zoom, where the cheerleaders will perform a special song and dance for you over a video call.
The starting price for a 30-minute session at the cafe is ¥1,980, inclusive of a drink. The base price for a virtual session online starts at ¥6,000 for 45 minutes.
