Popular Japanese noodle chain Afuri, best known for its bright and zesty yuzu ramen, has reopened its one-of-a-kind shop in Shinjuku. This new-concept outlet is dedicated to serving Afuri's new spicy ramen.

Located in Shinjuku Subnade, an underground shopping centre connecting Shinjuku and Shinjuku-sanchome stations, Afuri Karakurenai first opened in September 2019. After being closed for the past three months due to Covid-19 coronavirus, Afuri Karakurenai is back up and running with a new and improved menu featuring the chain’s Karakurenai spicy ramen.

The punchy, crimson-coloured soup uses Afuri’s original chicken broth as a base, and builds it up with white soy sauce, chilli powder, fresh chilli puree, special spicy miso, chilli oil, and – because it wouldn’t be an Afuri bowl without it – a dash of yuzu juice. You can choose how hot and spicy you want the noodles to be, ranging from an easy-peasy level zero to the blow-your-head-off level eight. The karakurenai ramen also comes as a tsukemen (dipping ramen) version, served with a dipping sauce made of seafood broth, soy sauce and of course, copious amounts of spice.

The Afuri Karakurenai restaurant operates from 11am-8pm (last orders 7.30pm) daily for the time being. All customers are required to sanitise their hands before entering the store.
