It’s August and Tokyo is deep in summer heat – the bright blue skies mean it’s time for nature getaways, traditional fans and dining outdoors. Japanese summer also calls for fresh produce; we’re talking about red tomatoes, juicy peaches and large, ripe watermelons. Just in time to serve up some of the season’s best fruit and veg, the Farmers Market at UNU is returning after a five-month hiatus due to the high number of Covid-19 coronavirus cases in Tokyo.
Returning the weekend of August 22, local farmers will set up shop in their usual place in front of Aoyama’s United Nations University from 10am to 4pm. The market is known for special homemade jams and dip, baked goods, organic fruit and veggies, and food trucks. The official announcement says the market will be held on a smaller scale, although there are no details on exactly what will be different.
Both the coronavirus pandemic and heavy rainfall earlier in summer have negatively affected small farms, so this is a great opportunity to support local producers and get some tasty, fresh food to boot. For more information, see the market’s official website.
