With the reopening of Universal Studios Japan in Osaka – only for Kansai residents for now – many fans were looking forward to exploring the park’s new attraction, Super Nintendo World, which was originally scheduled to open at the end of July.
However, according to NHK, USJ has decided to postpone the opening indefinitely over concerns that its popularity could cause a spike in Covid-19 coronavirus infections.
The new Nintendo-themed expansion of the park, featuring attractions and restaurants based on the game’s iconic characters including Mario, Princess Peach and Yoshi, is almost complete and has so far cost over ¥60 billion. Despite that, a new opening date for Super Nintendo World has yet to be announced.
If you’re a Kansai resident planning a trip to USJ, keep in mind that your visit will be accompanied by strict health and safety measures to curb the spread of coronavirus, including temperature checks upon entering the park and wearing a face mask at all times. The park has also released an English-subtitled video explaining all its new safety measures.
