Tokyo’s second state of emergency has held back restaurants and bars from operating past 8pm, which is a setback for those relying heavily on dinner service. Although many restaurants have decided to close temporarily for the time being, Yoyogi-Uehara’s famed Michelin-starred French restaurant Sio took this opportunity to extend their opening hours in the morning instead. Now, you can enjoy its signature Japanese-French dinner tasting menu for breakfast, hence the name morning ‘dinner’.
Chef Shusaku Toba is serving eight of his favourite dishes from the ten-course dinner menu. Dishes include a fluffy soufflé omelette, horse meat tartare and a side of freshly cooked rice and miso soup for ¥6,000. Though it may seem a little pricey for breakfast, it’s worth the splurge considering a dinner at Sio can easily set you back ¥10,000.
The usual wine pairing, however, has been replaced with a tea-pairing option. There’s a variety of brews to enhance the morning meal, including sparkling tea, green tea and puer with a hint of cacao vinegar.
Reservations can be booked online for 8.30am, 9am or 9.30am, but unfortunately, at the time of writing, the morning ‘dinners’ are fully booked until mid-February. However, Sio plans to continue this menu even after the state of emergency is lifted.
