Due to rising Covid-19 cases in and around the capital, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, along with the governors of neighbouring prefectures Saitama, Kanagawa and Chiba, teamed up with the central government in requesting that major Tokyo train companies cancel their all-night services on New Year’s Eve.
The extra trains are helpful for ferrying partygoers and faithful shrine visitors home after a night of celebration. However, according to NHK and The Japan Times, JR East, Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Keisei Railway, Keikyu Railway, Keio Railway, Tokyo Monorail and Enoshima Electric Railway have decided to cancel their late-night services on all lines on New Year’s Eve.
