Yes, yes, we know. Some of you didn’t come all the way to Japan just to be surrounded by all things Ikea, but it appears that many Tokyoites can’t seem to get enough of the rapidly expanding flat-pack furniture store.
Last month, Ikea opened a new city-centre concept store in Harajuku, and there are plans to open another store near Shibuya Crossing this winter. In the meantime, the Swedish company will also be launching a new apparel and goods collection to take their brand from the home to the street. This is Ikea’s first ever apparel line, and while it should eventually be made available worldwide, the inaugural collection will be released in Japan first, at the Harajuku store on July 31.
The line, officially called the Efterträda Collection, is a collaboration between Ikea in Sweden and Ikea Japan, and it’s inspired by the people of Tokyo. ‘Efterträda’ in Swedish directly translates to ‘successor’ and the company contemplates whether a new line of apparel and accessories could succeed the flat-pack furniture that Ikea is famous for.
The initial release features 10 items including a water bottle (¥399), tote bag (¥599), foldable umbrella (¥799), beach towel (¥1,299), t-shirt (¥1,499) and hoodie (¥2,499) that are printed with the barcode of Ikea’s popular Billy bookcase.
The Efterträda Collection will be available at the Ikea Harajuku store exclusively from July 31 to August 6. See the full lookbook of actual Tokyoites posing with the merch in their city apartments here.
