Even with a year-long delay of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the Olympic Torch burns brightly as a symbol of hope over an exhausting period filled with uncertainty. While it's unfortunate that Tokyo 2020 organisers have decided to not welcome overseas spectators due to the pandemic, the Torch Relay will still kick off as scheduled in a mere few days, albeit without onlookers. However, regardless of where you are in the world, you can still cheer for the runners and watch the ceremonious relay take place online via a live broadcast.
From Thursday March 25, athletes will carry the cherry blossom-inspired Tokyo Olympic torch, lit with the symbolic flame transported from Olympia, across 47 prefectures in Japan. The Torch Relay will begin in Fukushima and take 121 days to complete, involving an estimated 80-90 runners a day who will run 200 metres each.
The exact routes of the relay will only be revealed 30 minutes prior to the event to deter crowds from gathering at the venues. Nevertheless, the entire event will be streamed live both on NHK Online and on the official Tokyo 2020 website.
