Japan’s zoos and aquariums are favourite weekend destinations for people of all ages, but the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic forced many of these venues into temporary closure during their usual peak season earlier this year in spring. Although zoos and aquariums have resumed business again by early summer, reduced visitor numbers and shorter hours continue to affect them unfavourably. And of course, the animals still need proper care, regardless of visitor numbers.
To help support local zoos and aquariums around Japan, national newspaper The Asahi Shimbun has launched the Lover Zoo Project to collect donations for the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA).

To donate, you won’t need to spend any money at all – just head to the project website and virtually feed your favourite animals by clicking on the red button that says ‘エサをあげる’ (esa wo ageru), meaning ‘to feed’. After you click the button, the animal’s tray will be filled with its favourite food. Each click adds ¥1 to the donation pool, up to a maximum of ¥100,000.
The campaign ends on November 4, and you can feed the animals once per day. So click away!
