Shocking news for all Gundam fans: after over two decades since the first Gundam Café opened its doors in otaku mecca Akihabara, the four permanent official Gundam cafés across Japan are scheduled to close forever in January 2022.

While the Gundam Square café in Osaka will end its run on January 10, the original Gundam Café in Akihabara, the outlet in Odaiba right next to the massive Unicorn Gundam statue, and the Fukuoka branch will close their doors for the last time on January 30. There’s no mention of the Unicorn Gundam statue itself, so we’re betting that will stay put.
However, in addition to those four outlets, there’s a temporary Gundam Café at the Gundam Factory Yokohama. The good news is you’ll still have a chance to enjoy a roster of Gundam-themed food items – and the 18-metre-tall moving mecha there – until the end of March 2022. Note that you’ll need a ticket to the Gundam Factory in order to enter the café.
Even though the cafés may be gone for good, the company’s official announcement told fans to look forward to the brand’s next project. Fingers crossed for a Gundam comeback soon.
