Visit Suntory Hall to enjoy a fusion of contemporary music and utai (noh chanting). Contemporary Music x Noh is a project that started in 2010 to create new melodies for utai. Up until now, 39 composers from all over the world have joined the project and contributed songs.
Already in its ninth run this year, the concert features noh vocalist Ryoko Aoki and cellist Ayano Kitamura performing three new songs based on Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Happy Prince’ and the ‘Ryojin Hisho’, a collection of songs from the 12th century. The three works were composed by Mikel Urquiza, Silvia Borzelli and Yasutaki Inamori.
Before the performance starts, musicologist Yuji Numano will talk about contemporary music and utai, while the composers will introduce their new works.
