Omara Portuondo & Chucho Valdés

The story goes that pianist Chucho Valdés developed a teenage crush on singer Omara Portuondo when she was working as a showgirl – too bad that his father, Bebo, felt the same way about her. Many decades later, the pair have finally hooked up... musically speaking, at least. Portuondo – familiar from her guest spots with the Buena Vista Social Club – is still in fine voice at the age of 81, while the 70-year-old Valdés provides lush, sympathetic accompaniment. The pair will be airing songs from last year's Omara & Chucho album – and, doubtless, a few other favourites – during their Golden Week residency at the Blue Note.
