In a departure from the raunchy comedy of his previous films, director Todd Phillips stunned the world in 2019 with his interpretation of the infamous comic book character, the Joker. The film went on to win two Academy Awards for Hildur Guðnadóttir’s original score and for Joaquin Phoenix’s lead performance as down-on-his-luck party clown, Arthur Fleck.
Rather than being an origin story that follows the same formula as earlier supervillain films, ‘Joker’ is a more human yet brutal reflection of society’s darkest aspects as Arthur gradually spirals into madness and becomes an idol among anarchists and criminals in the unforgiving city of Gotham.
