Pride Month festivities in Tokyo are usually limited to the Rainbow Pride Festival and Parade – not this year, though. Launching for the first time in Tokyo this month is Q(WE)R, an international queer culture festival supported by the French Embassy in Japan and the Institut Francais du Japon. Taking place at several venues across Tokyo, the festival is packed with a host of events, late-night soirees, drag queen shows, film screenings, exhibitions and workshops.
The festival kicks off on April 18 and runs through May 6, with the the aim of creating a more inclusive Tokyo and expanding the platform for showcasing the city’s queer artists. Here are just a handful of the events to look forward to that celebrate diversity and address the fight for greater equality.
