Budget hotels and hostels are hardly a rarity in Tokyo, but we still couldn’t hide our surprise when we first heard about Iriya’s informatively named Tokyo ¥1980 Hotel, which actually does offer rooms for that very price (plus tax). Relatively conveniently located on the northeastern side of Ueno and with Wi-Fi equipped single rooms, this joint offers some serious value, despite the fact that showers and toilets are shared. The only catch is that higher prices may apply during peak times and before holidays, so make sure to check the details before booking.
